How loud are the PEC A/Cs?
The PEC A/C units are designed for indoor applications and we use
advanced compressor technology to further reduce mechanical noise. The blowers or fans are
all centrifugal type and reduce the air noise of the unit. The dB rating for this unit
varies because of the installation methods but is typically less than 55 dB.
Does the unit make water? What happens to the water ( known as condensate)?
Yes, the PEC A/C's are true air conditioners and some moisture is
removed from the air which results in condensate. The condensate collects in the
condensate tank located behind the bottom front door. When the tank fills up the unit will
begin sending condensate with the exhaust vent air.
How often will I need to empty the tank?
With the drain valve closed you have a "wet exhaust" and the condensate is contantly exhausted with the warm air while the tank empties itself. With the drain valve open you can create a "dry exhaust" and then an auxillary water pump is available to constantly remove condensate and pump it to a drain.
How large is the condensate tank?
The internal condensate tank holds approximately 1 pint. When the tank
is full the PEC A/C's start venting the condensate through the exhaust air.
What if I need to run my PEC A/C 24/7?
It is desired to vent the unit outside to remove the condensate. The PEC A/C has an optional external condensate pump that can be
installed to drain the condensate to allow continuous uninterrupted cooling. The pump has a 15’ lift
capability which will get you up to the drop ceiling level (or you can place the unit off the ground on a stand) and allow for connection to a
drain line.
How long can the condensate line be?
The PEC A/C has a condensate pump option that comes with 25' of
3/8" plastic tubing. You may require more tubing than what is supplied with the
pump. You can either attach the new section of tubing to the supplied tubing with a
coupler or purchase a new section of tubing to fit the required length of your condensate
drain line. You can go as far with the tubing as long as you keep the tubing sloping
down at an angle. Again if you need to go a long distance to your drain then we
recommend that you go up as much as you can (up to 15') then go towards your drain with
the tubing sloping down at an angle.
Do I need to vent the unit to the outside?
It is desired to vent the unit outside, however, you do not need to vent the PEC A/C's to the outside. If you are
cooling an enclosed equipment environment you do need to discharge the condenser air (warm
air) out of the space you are trying to cool. The accessory ducting kit, included with
each unit, will allow for condenser air discharge into the ceiling plenum area, out a
window/ceiling vent/chimney or through a wall.
How far can I duct the unit?
The accessory ducting kit that comes with the PEC A/C is equipped with
enough duct to reach the ceiling of a standard commercial building. You can add a few more
feet of ducting but you must keep your duct run as straight as possible. The maximum duct
run for the condenser air is 20’. For each 90 degree bend you must subtract 10’
from your maximum duct run length. If you are ducting the condenser air into the ceiling
you already have one 90 degree bend coming out of the unit so that would allow a maximum
duct run of 10’ going straight up into the ceiling.
What kind of maintenance is required?
Unit maintenance is quick and easy. The PEC A/C has a totally sealed
refrigeration system. It should not be necessary to recharge your unit. The only regular
preventative maintenance is cleaning the washable filter. If you have installed an
optional condensate pump you need to keep the drain line clear.
What do I need to do if I am going to store the unit?
Before storing the unit you want to ensure the condensate tank is empty. Next you
would operate the PEC A/C in the fan mode for about 5 minutes to dry out the
evaporator coil and get all the moisture off of the coil. Turn the unit off, empty the
condensate tank again, and wipe down the cabinet with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Your
PEC A/C will be in prime shape when your next cooling need arises.
PEC A/C Application FAQ'S
How large of an area can I cool with the PEC A/C?
That depends on what is in the area you are trying to cool. All air
conditioning units are rated in BTU, or British Thermal Unit, which is a unit of measure.
For equipment cooling we need to
determine the amount of power being used by the equipment in the room so we can do a basic
heat load calculation. For typical interior well insulated rooms where building air never exceeds 86 degrees F, containing computer servers, copiers, ups, etc., you can use 600 BTU's per circuit breaker 5 amp rating or per person located in that room. For buildings with existing airconditioning to 76 degrees F, you can use half that number.
How cold can I get my computer server room?
The PEC A/C will give you approximately a
20°F temperature differential – for instance, if the air outside your room is 86°F, the unit will
deliver approximately 66°F air.
Can I put the PEC A/C on my UPS?
Absolutely, as long as the UPS is properly sized.
Can I plug into an extension cord?
We do not recommend that you operate the PEC A/C using an extension
cord.
Do I need a dedicated circuit to run the PEC A/C?
The PEC A/C is a mechanical device and could potentially put noise
onto the line when the compressor starts and stops. A dedicated line is not required but
would certainly be recommended if your computer and electronic equipment is not protected
by a UPS or surge suppresser.
What other accessory items do I need for my application?
The PEC A/C comes complete with the accessory ducting kit for the
condenser air to a window. The standard ducting kit allows you to duct the warm air into the drop
ceiling area, a return air duct, out a window or through a wall. Click here for additional available accessories for our portable air conditioners.
Who can I get to install my PEC A/C?
The PEC A/C is designed for quick set-up. IF YOU CAN UNPACK THE
BOX, YOU CAN SET UP THE UNIT. Installation requires no tools; accessory parts simply
slide in place or snap together. If you elect to use the optional condensate pump you may
require the services of a handyman or plumber, depending on the location of your
condensate drain line.
Who Has Purchased Portable Air Conditioners From PEC Inc?
Many of the major US companies and hundreds of organizations who depend on PEC to bring air conditioning to their overheated information super highways.
